Ways to improve your vocabulary

One area where most struggle when it comes to speaking English as a second language is a limited vocabulary. Its seems that when trying to speak naturally or express oneself, only the same few words keep coming to mind. One way to teach yourself to use a more varied and exciting vocabulary is to play a word association game when you are reading or writing or listening to English material. The game is fairly simple. As you come across a word, even a simple word you know well, try an think or say the first word that comes to mind, e.g. If you read the word 'consider'- you might immediately say the word 'think'. The same goes for the word 'evident' - you might say 'revealed', and even simple words like 'small' - you say 'tiny'.

This method helps the brain to make new pathways or connections between new words and words already memorized. It also helps us to use the alternative words and increase our limited vocabulary to a more well rounded and exciting one.

Why not try it now, here are a list of words to use: intend; concern; approach; engage; apparent; concept.
